#1 COWGATE
After every storm, there is a rainbow

Cowgate is where I started collecting texts during lockdown in Edinburgh.

After weeks of following the rule like a good citizen, I needed a real walk, which means the destination can’t be supermarket.

When I walked through empty street at Cowgate, these words came to view.

Suddenly I stopped feeling alone, I knew we are all in the storm together even though there was not a trace of any rainbow.

-

#2 TOLLCROSS FIRESTATION
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for others

<img width="4928" height="3264" width_o="4928" height_o="3264" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/297d25af31de4bf8ef958b95d0dc0060c8f801c7d669a91e411b448591011732/Firestation_1.png" data-mid="101571104" border="0" data-scale="95" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/297d25af31de4bf8ef958b95d0dc0060c8f801c7d669a91e411b448591011732/Firestation_1.png" />
<img width="4928" height="3264" width_o="4928" height_o="3264" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b63f4182aa890dbdfb007f666801d0f330990c3bc566b524b17d8bf8d9104253/Firestation_2.png" data-mid="101571273" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b63f4182aa890dbdfb007f666801d0f330990c3bc566b524b17d8bf8d9104253/Firestation_2.png" />

Sometimes I walked to Evolution House (where our studio was) just to take a look at the empty building, and this fire station was on my way home.

One day I noticed there were some bouquets with cards on the floor. It’s for a firefighter who sacrificed himself for saving people in 2009.

I stood there, couldn’t talk for ages.

Not for the noble act of that firefighter but for the unchanged love from his family and friends that kept them putting flowers and words in front of the fire station for over ten years, even during pandemic and lockdown.

-

University staffs and teachers started a strike since 2020 spring. However, the whole striking movement was forced to pause because lockdown arrived so soon and unexpectedly.

When I walked around campus in June, all the slogans and flyers were still on the walls (and the sarcastic little sticker), just like the time had been frozen.

At the time, people stopped protesting about unfair wages and working hours because they needed to focus on surviving, but it didn’t mean the unfairness no longer exist.

-

I like to go through a short tunnel from my flat to supermarket. The graffiti on tunnel wall had always caught my attention. Some of them were political and some are both humorous and kind of philosophical.

I noticed the first one because it is a lyric from one of my favourite band Stars. The song started playing peacefully in my head every time I saw it.

But I wondered, would we actually not look back after we lived through this?

The second text just made me laugh from my heart. Couldn’t agree more.

-

#7 LAURISTON CAMPUS
The biggest secret of my life is that: I don’t exist

For quite a while, I was not in the mood for anything.

There was nothing changed in my lockdown life, just stayed at home day after day.

I started losing the sense of passing time, losing the connection to real world (and not yet built a satisfying connection with the virtual world).

While making this project, I saw this message on the gate of Lauriston Campus.

Maybe it was left by a person who was afraid of losing their own trace of existence, just like I was.

-

#8 GRANTON
I come with my will to survive

While I was playing flâneur in the city, my flatmate went for long therapeutic walks to Granton beach time after time.

The two hours walk from our flat to the beach made one’s body exhausted, and one’s mind calm and clear.

She stepped into the sand, picked up a branch and wrote this sentence down. It was like a silent shouting.

Just like her temporary message would eventually be erased by waves, we were just passengers to this place, but at the moment, we were indeed a part of Edinburgh.

-

I found this sentence near a primary school, on a colourful handmade poster.

It was the wise word from Desmond Tutu, and it struck me of how I was burying my head in the sand that even a poster made by school children had more courage than me.

It was the time when people started calling “Black Lives Matter,” but I almost never expressed opinions because I told myself it was not my place to say.

The truth was, I used that as an excuse to avoid touching serious and sensitive issues and never truly faced myself.

As this pandemic seemed to be endless, doubt and restlessness had been spreading in people’s mind. All kinds of messages gradually filled up the wall beside our peaceful Union Canal.

Most of the texts on that wall were opinions or emotional expressions, while this one was more of a crying for help in desperate.

Sometimes most people could only follow, without enough information to judge anything.
However, the idea of believing a small group of people should have real solution for this huge ciaos was even more unsettling.

Edinburgh Castle was on a rock hill higher than almost entire city, and I loved to stay there for hours just trying to recognize all the buildings I knew.

The motto of Scotland on castle gate meant “No one can harm me unpunished” in Latin.

It was far from any motto that I’ve seen in my own culture; therefore, I was intrigued.

This sentence certainly reflected the history of this tough land. However, seeing it at the peculiar time of pandemic, I was caught by mixed feelings from the complicated contradiction in human nature.

-

#12 GRASSMARKET
Eat well, save money, look after the planet

Of all the words I collected from this city, this one made me think most.

It was a slogan on community notice board. I thought it reveals that the ultimate (also the most basic) things we human beings pursued were so very simple, at least very simple in the beginning.

To survive, we need food, we need money (because we are living in modern world) to keep us safe and secure, and we need our world continue to be a suitable environment for living.

What else do we really need?

-
